Nidarosdomens Guttekor ScreenshotThis weeks "Saturday chorale" is a performance of a modern piece by a Norwegian choir. There are lots excellent Scandinavian choirs with a long history of musical excellence and the Nidarosdomens Guttekor (Nidaros Cathedral Boys Choir) is a good example of this. Their name "Nidarosdomens Guttekor" translates  as "Nidaros Cathedral Boys' Choir",  "Nidaros" is the old name for Trondheim dating back to when Trondheim was the Norwegian capital, and the boys in it  Cathedral choir are the inheritors of a 900-year-long tradition of boy singers in Nidaros Cathedral. It's a very good choir and with an impressive repertoire :

The choir sings everything from Gregorian chant to newly composed pieces, and regularly performs major choral works with orchestra and soloists.

Koret synger alt fra gregoriansk sang til nykomponerte stykker, og fremfører med jevne mellomrom store korverk sammen med orkester og solister.

I've picked this performance of Andrew Lloyd-Webbers "Pie Jesu" sung by the Nidarosdomens Guttekor because it's one of the most beautiful performances of the piece I know. The soloists in this performance are Viktor Stenhjem and Lars Magnus Steinum. This video is from a broadcast on Norwegian television for Easter 2005. The song was recorded by the choir in 2003 for their album "Evige Öjeblick" ("Eternal Moments"). You'll find the lyrics and an English translation below the fold.

Enjoy :-)

Lyrics

Latin English
Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu,

Pie Jesu, Pie Jesu,

Qui tollis peccata mundi;

Dona eis requiem,

Dona eis requiem.

Lord, have mercy,

Lord, have mercy,

You who take away the sins of the world;

Grant them peace,[rest]

Grant them peace.[rest]

Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei,

Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei,

Qui tollis peccata mundi;

Dona eis requiem,

Dona eis requiem.

Lamb of God, Lamb of God,

Lamb of God, Lamb of God,

You who take away the sins of the world;

Grant them peace,[rest]

Grant them peace.[rest]

Sempiternam, sempiternam requiem. Peace everlasting, everlasting.
