"If Ye Love Me" has inspired many composers of choral music, amongst them is the British Composer Philip Wilby (born Pontefract 1949). Wilby’s best known as a composer for brass bands. But his choral compositions have worth and deserve wider recognition. Amongst his choral works are some truly lovely settings. This is his setting of "If Ye Love Me" sung by St Edmundsbury Cathedral Choir. Like Wilby the choir’s work deserves a far wider audience. Lyrics and notes are below the fold. Enjoy :-)
Lyrics & Notes:
If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father,
and He shall give you another Comforter,
That He may abide with you forever;
Een the Spirit of truth.
And ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you,
and shall be in you.
I will not leave you comfortless.
I will come to you.
I posted about Tallis’ setting of "If Ye Love Me" back in February of this year, you can find that posting here.
A note about the ceiling: The fan vaulted ceiling I’ve picked as the the background graphic for this video is new. The Cathedral’s new tower was finished in 2010, the ceiling was finished in march of that year.
