Peter Philips’ motet "Tu es vas electionis" ("You are a chosen vessel") was written "In Festo Conversionis S. Pauli" – for performance on the Feast of The Conversion of St. Paul (January 25th). It was published in 1612 in his Cantiones sacrae. Philips’ compositional style which emphasises the text’s natural rythmn is much in evidence in this motet in which can also be heard the influence of the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria. The painting in the video is Hans Speckaert’s (circa 1540 – 1577) “Conversion of St Paul”, oil on wood dated 1570. Lyrics and a tranlsation to English are both below the fold. Enjoy :-).

Lyrics : Tu es vas electionis
|Tu es vas electionis, sancte Paule Apostole, prædicator veritatis in universo mundo: |
Per quem omnes Gentes cognoverunt gratiam Dei.
Intercede pro nobis ad Deum, qui te elegit, ut digni efficiamur gratia Dei.
Tract after Septuagesima
|You are a chosen vessel, St Paul the Apostle, preacher of the truth to the whole world; |
by whom all the Gentiles come to know the grace of God.
Intercede for us with God, who chose you, that we may be made worthy of the grace of God.
