Franz Biebl (1906-2001): Ave Maria – Auckland Youth Choir

Although he composed many works for children’s, men’s, and mixed choruses the German composer Franz Biebl‘s best known composition is his ‘Ave Maria’  it might have languished in obscurity were it not for the fact that Biebl gave it to the Cornell Glee Club who brought it to America. In America it was popularised by Chanticleer  and is now so well-known there that " few male choristers in America need further introduction to Biebl’s "Ave Maria" ". It’s unusual in that Biebl took two Marian texts – the Angelus and the Ave Maria and joined them together producing a hybrid text for his work. It’s now very popular with choirs and often performed both in Germany and abroad. It’s performed in the YouTube video below by the excellent New Zealand choir the Auckland Youth Choir directed by Rostislava Pankova-Kradjov.  Enjoy :-).

Text: Franz Biebl: Ave Maria

LatinEnglish translation:

Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae
et concepit de Spiritu sancto.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus, Jesus.

Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini.
Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus, Jesus.

Et Verbum caro factum est
et habitavit in nobis.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus, Jesus.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen. Amen. Amen.

The angel of The Lord visited Maria
and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

Maria said: See the servant of the Lord.
May it happen to me according to your word.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

And the Word became flesh
and lived among us.

Hail Mary, Full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Holy Mary, pray for us now and in the hour of our death.
Amen. Amen. Amen.
