Missa Ecce ego Johannes (Complete): We don’t know which song or motet it is upon which Palestrina’s six part Mass ‘Missa Ecce ego Johannes’ is based. It seems more than likely that it was polyphonic but that’s about as far as speculation can usefully go. This performance by Westminster Cathedral Choir under James O’Donnell brings out, brilliantly, Palestrina’s closely interwoven homophony and counterpoint. The performance by the trebles is noteworthy both for their clarity of tone and for the seeming ease with which they move through the setting.
