Dieterich Buxtehude (c1637-1707): Jesu, meine Freud und Lust, BuxWV59 – Matthew White

Buxtehude’s rather sentimental accompanied chorale Jesu, meine Freud und Lust (Jesus, my joy and my pleasure) is set for the most part in a charming triple time in A major, and ends with a vigorous duple-time Amen. It’s sung very nicely indeed below by Matthew White accompanied by the Aradia Ensemble under Kevin Mallon. Enjoy :-).

Text & Translation: Jesu, meine Freud und Lust BuxWV59

DeutschEnglish
Jesu, meine Freud und Lust,
Jesu, du mein Speiß und Kost.
Jesu, meine Seligkeit,
Jesu, Trost in allem Leid.
Jesus, my joy and my pleasure,
Jesus, my meat and drink,
Jesus, my eternal salvation,
Jesus, consolation in pain.
Jesu, meiner Seelen Sonn,
Jesu, meines Geistes Wonn,
Jesu, meine Kron und Lohn,
Jesu, du mein Gnadenthron.
Jesus, sun that lights my soul,
Jesus, joy of my spirit,
Jesus, my crown and my reward,
Jesus, my throne of mercy.
Jesu, meine Zuversicht,
Jesu, meiner Augen Licht,
Der du leitest meinen Sinn,
Daß ich dich recht lieb gewinn.
Jesus, source of my faith,
Jesus, light of my eyes,
You it is who guides my spirit
So that I can love you.
Jesu, süßer Nektarfluß,
Jesu, trauter Liebeskuß,
Meine Hoffnung und mein Teil,
Mein Erretter und mein Heil.
Jesus, sweet river of nectar,
Jesus, secret loving kiss,
My hope and my sure future,
My saviour and my redeemer.
Jesu, meine Himmelspfort,
Meine Hilf an allem Ort,
Meine Zuflucht und mein Freund,
Mein Beschützer vor dem Feind.
Jesus, my door to heaven,
Always by my side,
My refuge and my friend,
Protector from my enemies.
Jesu, meine Seligkeit
Und mein Glück in dieser Zeit,
Mein gewünschtes Paradeis,
Mein Erheber Ruhm und Preis.
Jesus, my eternal salvation,
My joy in present times,
My wished-for paradise,
To your glory and reward I aspire.
Jesu, unerschaffnes Gut,
Jesu, komm in mein Gemüt,
Laß uns ungeschieden sein,
Allerliebstes Jesulein.

Amen

Johann Scheffler (1624-1677)

Jesus, my uncreated good,
Jesus, come into my mind,
Let us be inseparable,
Dearest, sweetest Jesus.

Amen
