Alonso Lobo (1555-1617): Ave regina caelorum

Lobo’s  five-part setting of Ave regina caelorum is a musical homage to Guerrero’s Ave virgo sanctissima employing the same eight beats apart strict  canon between the sopranos as its role model. Enjoy :-)

Alonso Lobo (1555-1617): Ave regina caelorum

Performers: The Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips (conductor).

Text & Translation: Ave regina caelorum

Ave regina caelorum,
Ave domina Angelorum.
Salve, radix sancta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta.
Gaude gloriosa, super omnes speciosa.
Vale, valde decora,
et pro nobis semper Christum exora.
Hail, queen of heaven,
Hail, mistress of the angels.
We hail you, the holy stock
from which has sprung the light of the world.
Rejoice, glorious one, fair above all others.
Farewell, most gracious one,
and pray to Christ for us always.

    • Glad you like it. Yes it’s pure css – and has the benefits of saving me from having to prepare a graphic and of speedier repsonse times for readers.
