Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650): Nos autem gloriari

Cardoso’s five-part (SAATB) setting of the funeral motet Nos autem gloriari was published in 1648 in his last collection of music. It starts quite formally but Cardoso soon allows himself to write in a far more fluid and relaxed manner. Enjoy :-).

Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650): Nos autem gloriari

Nos autem gloriari oportet in cruce
Domini nostri Jesu Christi,
in quo est salus, vita,
et resurrectio nostra.

Yet should we1 glory in the cross
of our Lord Jesus Christ
in whom is salvation, life
and our resurrection.

Performers: The Tallis Scholars conducted by Peter Phillips

  1. Translation Note: ‘Should we’ is being used in the sense of ‘it behoves us’ thus the sense of the translation is ‘It behoves us we who glory in the Cross …’ or ‘It behoves those of us who glory in the Cross …’
