After the success of her performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no.2 op.18 with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie conducted by Martin Panteleev for the Dutch broadcaster Avrotos Anna Fedorova went on to record it to CD. Then she decided to tackle his Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30. Rachmaninov composed it in 1909 nine years after Piano Concerto no.2 op.18 and it received its premiere in New York with the New York Symphony Orchestra, led by Walter Damrosch, on November 28, 1909 while its next performance was in January 1910 when he played it with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gustav Mahler. Thereafter it largely fell into neglect for around eighty years. It’s a difficult and demanding piece of music that demands considerable virtuosity from any soloist attempting it. Fortunately for us Fedorova shows us that she is more than equal to the challenge in this live performance given in November of this year for Avrotos. Enjoy :-)
