Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741): 6 Violin Concertos [I Concerti dell’Addio] | Fabio Biondi Europa Galante

These six concertos are entitled the ‘Farewell Concertos’ because, just six weeks before his death in July 1741, alone, unappreciated, and in urgent need of money Vivaldi signed them over to that musical devotee of all things new Vinciguerra VI, Count of Collalto. We don’t know exactly when he wrote them but based upon internal stylistic evidence it’s reasonable to assume that he wrote them towards the end of his career. Perhaps this is why people say they detect intimations of death in the music but with the exception of the very poignant Largo of the C major Concerto (RV189) I find it difficult to see their point particularly as the ensuing finale is packed with those virtuosic touches that make Vivaldi’s music so exciting. I particularly enjoy how each concerto presents a different aspect of Vivaldi’s skill at fusing virtuousity to the newly fashionable light galant style. Enjoy :-).
